Cold Storage Solutions for Monoclonal Antibody Treatment
While vaccination is proving to be the most common and effective preventive measure against COVID-19, many patients currently suffering from the virus are now being treated with therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAb). In this treatment, mAbs are created in a laboratory and designed to mimic the activity of naturally produced antibodies: attacking the germs that cause the coronavirus to reduce the severity of infection.
In 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an emergency use authorization for mAb treatment for eligible patients, generally those with weakened immune systems and/or those at high risk for the severe illnesses associated with COVID-19. Patients receive monoclonal antibody treatment at outpatient facilities via intravenous (IV) infusions.
Monoclonal Antibodies Storage Requirements
Similar to many COVID vaccines, it is recommended that unopened vials of monoclonal antibodies are refrigerated between 2 and 8ºC.
See the drug manufacturers' Safety Data Sheet for specific storage and handling requirements.
